Dominic has been Djing for over 20 years now and has seen many changes in Londons club scene.
He started in 1983 playing with a travelling roadshow but it was after his 1st trip to Ibiza in 1987, that really changed his life forever.
On his return to the UK, he started promoting a club called Zigi’s in south London and his resident DJ every Sunday was Carl Cox. This was at the birth of the Acid house rave scene and Djing along side Mr Cox each week, gave Dominic the DJ education he needed to break into the circuit properly. “Carl taught me what I Know today” he says.
Right through the Summer of Love in 88, Dominic played all over the Uk and across Europe and ended up with a residency at Rage @ Heaven playing weekly alongside Fabio and Groovrider. The music policy was across the board House n Hardcore and this was well before even Drum n Bass was invented. He was also Resident at Legends in Mayfair every Saturday night playing more of a funky house set each week.
Over the next few years the scene split into various genres and Dominic was able to play a different set according to where he was booked. Sometimes I would be playing a Hardcore techno set at one gig then id have a different box of more Jungle/DnB for say Sunday Roast where I was resident. In the end I made a decision after getting 3 boxes of records stolen from a car, to concentrate on the deep house sound that I loved the most.
I was palying at loads of events all over London like Frog n Nightgown and The Fitness Center and there was a new fresh Sunday scene that was based on the Underground deep house sound.
Then in 1993, Dominic teamed up with Andy Swallow of Labello/Public demand records and started the seminal Underground House night at the Gass club called The Spreadlove Project. This is where the UK Garage sound started according to most people in the industry and all the big UKG names played there over the 3 years it ran.
This was also where Dominic got the Spreadlove name from!
“What your Dj Dominic, Dominic Spreadlove?” was how it went, so he kept the name.
Each week you could hear Dominic alongside his good pal Mc Creed, laying down the very best in cutting edge Deep House and Garage to a packed dancefloor every week. These nights will go down in clubbing history. “We played what we liked not what was already popular. It could be vocal or really dirty deep house but we used to play it a little faster than normal and eventually it got called Speed Garage after Todd Terry mentioned how we speeded our sets up, in a magazine”.
Eventually the UKG scene evolved to 2 step, and Dominic reverted to playing the more Soulfull sound & did a show on House FM every Saturday afternoon. He also ran another well known Sunday party, on the yacht club every Sunday afternoon all thru the summer of 2003.
He is now palying a deep minimal tek sound, and can be heard in and around Shoreditch in Londons east end as well as across the Uk. He is also doing exclusive Old Skool UK & US House & Garage sets for Back to 95 big up (Mikee & Jemaine).
Dominic is currently working hard on his latest TEACHMIX project, soon to be available online www.teachmix.co.uk. This product will self teach almost anyone how to DJ on any format! For bookings call 0207-993-8029
